Laser Skin Resurfacing

Laser Skin Resurfacing continues to be the gold standard for reduction of wrinkles and facial scars. Laser resurfacing corrects the effect of exposure to the sun and aging of the skin. It reduces wrinkles without scalpels or stitches.

How does the laser work?

The most frequently used lasers for resurfacing are the Erbium, and the CO2 Lasers. Each has specific indications for each patient. We have both lasers in our office, so we can treat you according to your specific needs. Lasers deliver precise, invisible beams of light in extremely short burst (pulses) lasting tiny fractions of a second each, allowing micro-fine layers of skin to be vaporized bloodlessly with each pass of the laser. This way, skin is removed layer by layer (like peeling an onion) allowing much more control than previously popular procedures such as dermabrasion or chemical peels.

As the laser is guided over the sun-damaged or wrinkled skin, it gently vaporizes the top layers. Once the outer layers have been removed, the body generates new skin and procedures new collagen. The new skin beneath is softer, smoother with a more youthful appearance.

How long is the recovery period?

Generally, patients enjoy a short recovery time after laser resurfacing. Most of the healing occurs within seven to ten days, which is the time necessary for the skin to grow back. The first few days, the treated area will crust and weep. It is kept moist by abundant use of a healing ointment. After the initial healing time, the skin stays red for a few weeks, gradually fading to a pleasant light pink that lasts up to three months. Pain Is moderate and usually controlled by Tylenol alone.
